Enrolment ServiceThe first church parade of the new 09-10 session was held at our church on Sunday 13th September 2009. The Company Section boys & staff were joined by the Anchor Boys & Junior Section Boys attending the morning service taken by Rev. Keddie. The service was extra special as it signified the start of our 125th year!
ClimbingFriday 6th November 2009 saw the boys & staff visit the Glasgow Climbing Centre in Ibrox for an evening of indoor climbing. After getting kitted out with harnesses, climbing shoes & helmets the boys were split into two groups of 6, each group with their own instructor. Both groups got roped up and scaled different areas of the old church, under the watchful eye of the centre's instructors. A fear of heights was definitely not advisable as the boys scaled up the walls before abseiling back down. The boys had a great time and most seemed thoroughly knackered by the end of the night!

BagpackingOur annual bagpacking took place on Saturday 28th November at Asda, Bearsden. The boys manned the checkouts to help shoppers pack their bags between 11am and 4pm, raising money for company funds along the way. Thanks to the boys' hard work a magnificent sum of just over £650 was raised which will go towards our BB fees & help fund company trips throughout the session. The boys & staff were back at Asda Bearsden on Wednesday 9th December to bagpack for charity this time. Once again the boys spent the evening helping shoppers pack away all their purchases, this time in aid of Asda's chosen charity for the year 'Cash For Kids'. At the end of the evening a grand total of £280 was raised for 'Cash for Kids' thanks to the boys efforts. A big thanks to all the boys and staff who came along to help out on both Saturday 28th and Wednesday 9th.
Visit to The IMAXThe boys & staff took a trip to the IMAX cinema for their Christmas Night Out on Monday 21st December 2009 to see Avatar in 3D. Everyone donned their 3D glasses for the James Cameron spectacular and weren't disappointed! The film was given the 5th Glasgow seal of approval, proven by the fact everyone was rooted to their seat for the whole film...
Coffee MorningOur Annual Coffee Morning took place on Saturday 13th March 2010 and had added significance this year as it is our 125th Anniversary. There was a large turn out of friends & family as well as many members of the church congregation. Along with the usual stalls such as the bottle stall, cake & candy and the ever-popular hot rolls the Company Section boys & staff organised a Car Wash and spent the 2 and half hours between 10am and 12.30pm busy soaping, scrubbing & rinsing loads of cars.
![]() Once all the raffle prizes had been given out and the silent auction prizes won the magnificent total over just over £1500 was raised. Thanks again to everyone who came along to contribute to such a fantastic total.
District ParadeWe hosted the Partick District Parade on Sunday 28th March 2010 to coincide with our 125th anniversary celebrations. Read more about it on the home page.
125th DisplayOur 125th Annual Inspection was held on Friday 14th May 2010 in the Large Hall. As it was an extra special year for the 5th Glasgow we held a joint inspection, with all three sections taking part in a fun-packed evening. Our Inspecting Officer for the night was Alan Hunter, Training Officer for Boys Brigade Scotland. The evening kicked-off with the Opening Service, with the boys piped in by ex-member David Henderson. After being inspected by Mr Hunter the Junior Section were first up, doing some "Follow the Leader" drill. Next the Anchor Boys took part in a mini-quiz, answering questions on the story, "The 'Veggy' Lion". To finish off the first half of the evening the Company Section took to the floor for "Thriller" - drill under ultra-violet lights in time to Michael Jackson's famous song. After the collection the Junior Section returned with their gymnastic "Take the Floor" display. The trampoline was wheeled out for the Company Section next, who showed the audience what they had been practicing throughout the session. The Anchor Boys followed with "Hooping Mad", a game (with hoops!). Finally the Junior Section played a game of "Rabbit Tails", with each boy trying to grab other boy's 'tails' whilst defending their own.
After the items from the sections the boys & staff re-formed for the Inspecting Officer's Remarks and then the Presentation of Prizes and Awards but not before Alan Hunter and a few of the boys cut our 125th birthday cake! The cake was served up with tea & coffee at the end of what was a very successful and enjoyable evening. Well done to all that took part and a big thanks to all the parents & friends who have supported the boys & staff over our 125th session. Summer Day OutWe held our final trip of the session, out Summer Day Out, on Saturday 12th June 2010 to Aberfoyle. Fifteen boys & 5 staff left Glasgow at 9am on a sunny June day and arrived at Action Adventure Activities near Gartmore just after 10am to enjoy a morning of outdoor activities. The boys & staff were split into 2 groups, the first donning elbow, knee & wrist pads for an hour's mountain boarding, the other doing their best Robin Hood impressions with an hour's archery. After the hour the groups switched activities, swapping advice with each other on the way!
With more than a few bumps & bruises, (as well as one broken arm!) we headed along Loch Ard to Forest Hills at Kinlochard for lunch outside before wandering down to Go-County's Water Park for a couple of hours fun on the inflatables on the loch. After drying out and a game of football everyone hopped back into the minibus for the short trip back to Glasgow to end a great day!
Previous SessionsSummer Camp 08-09Our Weekend Camp was held at the 1st Glasgow's campsite at Stillaig, near Tighnabruaich, from Friday 12th to Sunday 14th June 2009. All 13 boys & 6 staff attended the weekend which saw us graced with some nice sunny weather for the majority of our stay.Leaving the church at 6pm on the Friday in the minibus we took the ferry from Gourock to McInroy's Point and arrived at Camp around 8.30pm. After organising the tents & rules for the weekend we ventured out into the midgie infested countryside for a few widegames. Following the twilight games everyone settled down to supper before lights out at 11.45pm.
![]() After rising at 8pm on the Saturday and a hearty breakfast at 8.30am the boys had a quick tent inspection before taking part in 'Mission Improbable', a widegame involving the boys being split into teams and locating clues spread over the hills & coast nearby. The clues helped them solve one final clue which identified the location of the'bomb' that needed the correct combination to be 'defused'. A game of unihoc followed the widegame before lunch at 12.45pm. The 5th Olympics after lunch tested the boys throwing, running and communication skills before a Team Ironman saw the boys running down through the seashore, testing their stamina. Once they has recovered the boys & staff contested 'The Cowal Open' - a game of Quoit Golf over 18 'holes'. Football & Softball followed tea & duties at 5.30pm then the boys put their brains into gear for a quiz at 8.30pm. As the light faded it was back outside at 9.30pm for another widegame, 'Rockets & Interceptors', thankfully the midgies were not out in force! After a full days-worth of activities the boys were keen to get to bed after supper at 11pm for a well-earned sleep. Sunday morning saw a few of the boys unwilling to leave the comfort of their sleeping bags but after some gentle persuasion they managed to make breakfast at 8.30am before duties & tent inspection. The morning was taken up with another widegame, 'Contraband', which saw two teams trying to smuggle coloured 'moonshine' past a team of guards (the staff & seniors) who were armed with water bombs & water pistols. After lunch it was time to tidy & pack up camp before climbing into the minibus for the trip home after a very enjoyable weekend.
12-Hour Games NightA night (and morning) of fun and games took place from 7.30pm on Friday 3rd October 2008 to 7.30am on the Saturday morning. The idea behind the sponsored 12-hour games night was for the boys to have fun and raise money for CHAS whilst doing it! The evening kicked-off with Uni-hoc followed by 'bucket-ball' and then some football & trampolining. After some more team games like corner football the pace was reduced a little with a quiz before some supper, consisting of pizza, pakora &juice. From around 12am-7am various games were set up including darts, table-tennis, pool, board & video games. Throughout the night individual competitions took place for each activity - the only rule being if you fell asleep you were knocked out of the competition. Amongst the more unusual competitions was Wii Sports Ten-Pin Bowling projected onto a large overhead projector screen, Connor Warren battled his way through to the final to win this event. Breakfast was served at 7am and the boys trudged home to their beds at 7.30am, tired but happy. The total amount raised for CHAS was just over £350. Well done to everyone who took part!
Millport Cycle 07-08Leaving the church nice and early, (8.30am!) on Saturday 27th October 2007 the boys & staff from the company set off to cycle around Cumbrae, in the Firth if Clyde, similar to last year's challenge. Travelling to Largs by minibus we caught the ferry to Cumbrae, thanks to Caledonian MacBrayne Ferries for their help & assistance, then drove round to the town of Millport. Once all the keen athletes had been kitted out with bikes from Bremners we set off, some quicker than others, for our first 'lap' around the island. With the wind and rain never far away all 13 boys and 5 staff battled round the 10.5 mile coastal road and made it back to the minibus for a well earned rest and some lunch!
![]() After lunch, and a short shot in the playpark for many, around 7 boys headed off for their 2nd lap, with the remainder succumbing to post-lunch fatigue and choosing to cycle the 2 miles to the tearoom and back! The weather changed for the worse during the afternoon, with the wind battering the younger boys so much many of them had to ride behind a member of staff to shelter from the gusts. Determination won the day however and all the boys cycled safely back to Millport where a warm minibus awaited them. After returning the bikes to Bremners we hopped on the return ferry, and once back on the mainland stopped off at Largs for a well-earned bag of chips or an ice cream. A bus full of tired boys (& staff) returned to the church after a great day and a great effort by everyone, a big well done to all! The boys and staff were raising funds for our church, St Johns Renfield's roof which is in need of extensive repair. The church has already received lottery funding for a large portion of the work required but needs to raise another £95,000 themselves to fully cover the restoration costs. Through sponsorship by friends and family we hope to raise over £300 for the roof. Finally a big thank you to all the boys, their families and friends who sponsored them and Caledonian MacBrayne for assisting us. Well done!
