Welcome to the 5th Glasgow Junior Section Page

The 5th Glasgow Junior Section meet between 6.15 and 7.45pm on Tuesday nights from September until June. The Junior Section is for any boy from Primary 4 through to Primary 6. Boys are encouraged to undertake a variety of achievements under 5 headings gaining recognition for each one completed. At the end of the session they should have gained a Badge - Target & Bronze (P4), Silver (P5), or Gold (P6). A sample of the achievements undertaken in the past year are:

  • Creativity - Singing, Flying Bird, Flap Jacks, Drama
  • Mind - BB Badge, Trackword, The Solar System, Tangram
  • Spirit - I Forgot, The Lord's Prayer, Cups, This is your Life
  • Body - 5-a-side Football, Potted Sports, Board Games, Agilities
Crafts Games Trampolining

As you will see from the notes below we also compete with other companies in the Partick District Area with usually at least one competition a month throughout the year. Over the years the 5th have enjoyed a large number of individual successes cumulating in us often winning the overall Partick District Junior Section Title. While it is good to win it is just as rewarding seeing the boys competing and enjoying themselves with other boys from outwith their own immediate environment.

In addition we have Halloween and Christmas parties and on a Saturday at the end of May or early in June we take the boys away for a fun day out. On a Tuesday evening towards the end of May we hold our Annual Inspection & Prize Giving when family and friends are invited to come along and see the boys in action.

If you would like any further details or more information please send an email to us. The officers and boys look forward to meeting any boy who would like to come along and join in the fun.

International Team Games Competition 2019

Very well done to our Junior Section boys who came second in the Partick District International Team Games competition at the start of December. We finished only 0.5 point behind first place, it couldn't have been any closer! Great effort by all the boys.

November 2019

It has been decided to run the Anchor Boys and Junior Section jointly. The Anchor Boys have four members and the Junior Section, nine so it was thought advantageous to pool resources. The groups will run on a Tuesday evening from 6.15pm-7.45pm and have joint opening and closing ceremonies and joint games – thus providing more competition for the boys, but will separate to address the requirements of the programmes designed specifically for each section. This arrangement will be in place until Christmas when it will be reviewed.

Halloween 2019

Our Junior Section boys enjoyed their Halloween party on Tuesday 5th November, (one week later than planned). The boys took part in some ghoulish games, dooking for apples, fang-tastic food & some great costumes. Well done to all the boys for a great night!

Session 2018-2019

2018 /19 session was another busy one with 12 boys attending regularly. Tuesday nights followed the usual format of Inspection, Marching, Achievement activities and a wide selection of games. Achievements ranged from making Empire Biscuits, to designing Scottish Emojis, and from discussing bullying to learning about Fairtrade and Chinese New Year.

In November 2018 we took 10 boys to the Science Centre Sleepover - 12 hours of fun in the science centre with very little sleep!

For the first time in a few years we managed to participate in every district event, with great performances from all who took part. Some of the highlights were:

  • 1st place in the Marching (finally!!)
  • 2nd place in the 5 a side
  • 3rd place in the Scripture and General Knowledge Quiz

Hamish Matheson was the overall champion in the District Sports, Harry Watson overall champion at the 10 Pin Bowling and Alexander Gillan Long Jump champion for Glasgow Battalion.

As always one of the highlights of the year (after the Christmas Party) was our annual display. Mrs Matheson the Head Teacher of Kelvindale Primary School was Inspecting Officer and all the boys were on their best behaviour (sort of!).

After the inspection we ended the session with a 2 night Camp at Kinlochard Village Hall. The first overnight Camp for many many years. The boys took part in various activities, including a swim in the loch both mornings, a boat trip round Loch Katrine, a Camp treasure hunt and Camp Olympics, including Archery, Shot Putt and a variety of races. Among the many highlights of Camp was the Saturday night Chippy, and the nightly visit to the forest for wide games, although the midges were a little troublesome.
